How to Pick a Good Pet Photo

A good custom pet portrait starts with the right photo. For more general guidance, read our pet photo guide for paint by numbers, or follow these quick pet-specific tips.

✦ Use a Clear, High-Quality Photo

Choose a sharp photo where your pet’s important features are easy to see. Blurry, heavily pixelated, or very small images usually provide less usable detail for the final canvas.

✦ Choose a Close-Up

Photos where your pet fills a good portion of the frame generally work best. For dogs and cats, clearly visible eyes, nose, facial features, and distinctive markings help create a more recognisable finished portrait.

✦ Use Good, Even Lighting

Natural and even lighting works best. Try to avoid very dark shadows, strong backlighting, or filters that significantly change your pet’s natural colours. This is especially important for pets with very dark or very light fur.

✦ Keep the Background Simple Where Possible

A simple background allows more of the available canvas detail to be used for your pet. Busy backgrounds can still be used, but they introduce more shapes and colours and may make smaller canvases more difficult to paint.

✦ Allow More Space for Multiple Pets

You can include more than one pet in the same painting, provided each animal is clearly visible.

1 pet: at least 30×40 cm
2 pets: at least 40×50 cm
3+ pets: at least 50×65 cm

The ideal size can vary depending on how much of the photo your pets occupy and how detailed the original image is.

✦ Consider Fur Detail When Choosing Colours

24 colours: Simpler and easier to paint, suitable for photos with clear shapes and less subtle colour variation.
36 colours: Adds more tonal variation and works well for many dog and cat portraits.
48 colours: Best suited to photos where you want to preserve more variation in fur, markings, facial features, and subtle shading.

More colours can also create smaller numbered areas, particularly on a small canvas.

How to Order Your Kit

✅ Step 1. Upload Your Pet Photo

Click Choose photo and upload a clear image of your dog, cat, rabbit, horse, or other pet. A close, well-lit image generally gives our designer more useful detail to work with.

✅ Step 2. Choose Your Canvas Size

Select a canvas size that suits the composition and aspect ratio of your photo. Larger canvases provide more physical space for detail, which can be particularly helpful for multiple pets, full-body compositions, or detailed backgrounds.

36 colours: More tonal detail with moderate complexity

Your uploaded pet photo will be prepared for production. Our designer checks the composition and adjusts the image for the paint-by-numbers format, including important areas such as the face, eyes, fur, and major markings.

If the selected canvas shape does not work well with your photo and important parts would need to be cropped, we may contact you before production.
